Excerpt:

Back Where The Entire Adventure Began

As soon as the engine began to sputter, I knew that I was in real trouble. Up until then, I had somehow managed to convince myself that there was just something wrong with the fuel gauges. After all, how could I possibly have burnt through my remaining fuel as quickly as the gauges seemed to indicate? It simply wasn't possible. But with the engine choking and gasping, clinging to life on the last fumes of aviation fuel, it was clear that when the fuel gauges read, "Empty," they weren't kidding around.

The lightning strike that took out my radio and direction-finding gear hadn't worried me all that much. (Okay, I admit it worried me a little bit.) It wasn't the first time that this had happened to me, and besides, I still had my compasses to direct me to where I was going. But I did get a little bit concerned when I found nothing but open ocean as far my eyes could see at precisely the location where I fully expected to find tiny Howland Island—and its supply of fuel for the next leg of my journey—waiting for me. The rapidly descending needles on my fuel gauges made me even more nervous as I continued to scout for the island, but only when the engine began to die did I realize that I really had a serious problem on my hands.

The mystery of the disappearing fuel.

The enigma of the missing island.

The conundrum of what do I do now?

"Exactly," the little voice inside my head said to me in one of those annoying 'I-told-you-so' kind of voices. "What do you do now?"

"First, I am going to stay calm," I replied. "And think this through."

"You'd better think fast," the little voice said, and I could almost hear it tapping on the face of a tiny wristwatch somewhere up there in my psyche. "If you want to make it to your twentieth birthday, that is.  Don't forget that you're almost out of fuel."

"Thanks a lot," I replied. "You're a big help."

Easing forward with the control wheel I pushed my trusty De Havilland Beaver into a nosedive. Residual fuel from the custom-made fuel tanks at the back of the passenger cabin dutifully followed the laws of gravity and spilled forward, accumulating at the front and allowing the fuel pumps to transfer the last remaining drops of fuel into the main forward belly tank. This maneuver breathed life back into the engine and bought me a few more precious minutes to ponder my situation.

"Mayday, mayday, mayday," I said, keying my radio transmitter as I leveled my flight path out again. "This is aircraft Charlie Foxtrot Kilo Tango Yankee, calling any ground station or vessel hearing this message, over."

I keyed the mic off and listened intently for a reply. Any reply. Please? But there was nothing. There was barely even static. My radio was definitely fried.

It was hard to believe that it would all come down to this. After the months of preparation and training. After all the adventures that I'd had, the friends I'd made, the beauty I'd experienced, the differences and similarities I'd discovered from one culture to the next and from one human being to the next. All of this in the course of my epic flight around the entire world.

Or I should say, "my epic flight almost around the entire world," in light of my current situation.

And the irony of it was absolutely incredible. Three-quarters of a century earlier the most famous female pilot of them all had disappeared over this exact same endless patch of Pacific Ocean on her own quest to circle the globe. And she had disappeared while searching for precisely the same island that was also eluding me as I scanned the horizon with increasing desperation.

"Okay," I thought to myself. "Just be cool and take this one step at a time to think the situation through." I closed my eyes and focused on my breathing, slowing it down and reining in the impulse to panic. Inside my head, I quickly and methodically replayed every flight that I'd ever flown. Every emergency I'd ever faced. Every grain of experience that I had accumulated along the long road that had led me to this very moment. Somewhere in there was a detail that was the solution to my current predicament. I was sure of it. And all I had to do was find it.

Maybe the answer to my current situation lay somewhere among the ancient temples of Angkor in Cambodia? Or in the steamy jungles of east Africa? Or inside the towering pyramids of Giza? Or among the soaring minarets of Sarajevo? Or on the emerald rolling hills and cliffs of western Ireland? Or on the harsh and rocky lava fields of Iceland?

Wherever the answer was, it was going to have to materialize quickly, or another female pilot (me) would run the risk of being as well-known throughout the world as Amelia Earhart. And for exactly the same reason.

"It's been a good run at least," the little voice inside my head observed, turning oddly philosophical as the fuel supplies ran critically low. "You've had more experiences on this journey around the world than some people do in their entire lifetime."

"That's it!" I thought.

Maybe the answer to all this lies even further back in time? All the way back to the summer that had inspired me to undertake this epic journey in the first place. All the way back to where North America meets the Pacific Ocean—the islands and glaciers and whales of Alaska.

All the way back to where this entire adventure began.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: I Believe…A Ghost Story for the Holidays

Title: I Believe…A Ghost Story for the Holidays
Author: Valerie C. Woods
Genre: Magical Realism, Novella

Was Marley & Scrooge the only ghost-to-human intervention ever? This is the question. Marley’s haunting, and the arrangement he made for Scrooge had a far-reaching and beneficial effect.

Surely, poor Jacob Marley’s ghost found some peace for being such a compassionate medium. Further, it would be nice to believe that attempts at interventions like this occur with some frequency among unfulfilled spirits. Even now.

“I Believe… A Ghost Story for the Holidays” is a contemporary holiday romp through a Los Angeles neighborhood that invites the reader to join three wandering spirits hoping to transition to the light by New Year's Eve. But it will only happen if each of them can cure a human heart of their Scrooge-like tendencies to become more loving and charitable citizens of the planet.

Excerpt:

Tonight the Festival was free of cars. Pedestrians and cyclists meandered through the multi-colored lights of the welcoming arch, through blinking light displays of depictions of L.A. landmarks, and a slew of Santas, Elves and the occasional Menorah. As they approached the tunnel of lights, the pop music soundtrack of Christmas favorites came to a grinding halt.

The music shifted to a definitely Celtic beat. This section, under the tunnel of lights was paved with what looked like hardwood flooring. Then in a flash of light, there was Lucas, sliding onto the boards, as if skating on ice and the dance begins. By ones and twos, other dancers emerged from the crowd, joining in the syncopated rhythm of toe taps, drags and stomps, interspersed with slides, splits, and jumps. The crowd, moved back as the number of dancers increased. They moved with carefree abandon. Especially Lucas.

And Ramsey could see the joy. He recognized that joy. “You see that, Ram! That’s your boy.  Look at him…you used to have that kind of joy, remember?” And finally, Ramsey could see Sara’s apparitional form, glimmering through the unshed tears crowding his eyes. His smile at the sight of her was brilliant. The light he had tamped down for years, burst forth and connected with Sara’s luminescence and the unshed tears fell.  “And he’s good!”

Ramsey nodded.  The words wouldn’t come just yet.  He was getting re-acquainted with his joy. Sara glowed with her own joy. “Ramsey, you don’t have to agree with his dreams. You just have to believe in him.”  Ramsey nodded again. She moved closer to him, caressed his face with both her hands. “And don’t forget about you, Ram.” He managed to croak out a response.  “I do, Sara. I believe in both of us.”

Sara felt the light of their souls expand and embrace. And then, once again, Sara couldn’t help herself. She moved to her Lucas and followed him in the dance.  Her form reflected the multi-colored lights, like a kaleidoscope of light surrounding him. It was breathtaking. Ramsey watched the lights of his life together once more and laughed a laugh of pure bliss.

As the music reached its crescendo, Sara spun out of the dance and came face to face, not with Ramsey, but with the wildly staring face of Simon… it was quite a shock for Simon.  He never dreamed he’d see her again.  He took a step toward Sara’s form. She smiled the singular smile that had softened his heart and simply said, “Simon.”  Mesmerized, he took another step, but true to his nature, he then abruptly turned away. He ran away from the lights and headlong into the darkness of the park.

Author Bio

An avid reader while growing up on Chicago’s South Side, Ms. Woods began writing when, as a struggling actress in New York, she couldn’t find suitable audition material for women of color. This led her to write a book of audition monologues, Something for Everyone (50 Original Monologues). The book was initially self-published and is now published by renowned theatrical play publisher, Samuel French, Inc. (www.VCWoods.com)

After adapting an average play into a better screenplay, Ms. Woods was awarded a Walt Disney Screenwriting Fellowship and followed that up with writing and producing on network and cable drama series such as Under One Roof, Touched By An Angel, Promised Land, Any Day Now and Soul Food.

But fiction, her first love, compelled her to enter the world of prose. She had always written bits of fiction, short stories and a little poetry here and there.

In November 2012, Ms. Woods founded a micro-press: BooksEndependent, LLC (www.BooksEndependent.com) to support her work and the work of other new, independent authors of fiction and non-fiction.

The first title was Ms. Woods’ novella, I Believe... A Ghost Story for the Holidays. (Amazon.com) Then, what began as a gift became her second publication.

Several years ago, needing a birthday present for her sister Ms. Woods wrote a short story about a girl detective -- a highly fictionalized autobiography of the adventures she and her sister experienced in childhood. Another story was written for Christmas, then one for Mother's Day. That’s when Ms. Woods realized she was writing the kind of novel she and her sister would have loved to read as children, but which didn’t exist – the adventures of African-American Girl Detectives!
The result, Katrin's Chronicles: The Canon of Jacqueléne Dyanne, Vol. 1 is now available in paperback and Kindle edition at Amazon.com.

Excerpt:

“Ava, open your eyes and look outside,” Patrick whispered sweetly in my ear.

I wiped my tears away unsure of what I was seeing. Little white specks began to drift down from the sky slowly descending to the ground below. A swift wind brought more snowflakes falling gracefully to the earth, some being swept up against our window. The wind swirled the glistening snowflakes in a floating dance back and forth outside my window.

“The first snow,” I said somberly wishing I could be running outside to make a snow angel.

“Your favorite time of year is the first snow. Perhaps Sergio will give us permission sometime after the party tomorrow to go up and have some fun if it sticks,” Patrick said aloud making his intentions known so Sergio could pretend it was his idea tomorrow, falling right into Patrick’s trap.

“That would be a dream come true,” I hesitantly played along. If we have to put our plan into action I prayed we could all escape.

I should be happier knowing this could be coming to an end, but I don’t want it to end if it means I have to leave without you, I sent my thoughts to Patrick.

I’ll always find my way back to you Ava. Patrick wrapped me closer as we sat silently watching the peaceful snow fall.

Author Interview:

Why do you write?

I write because it is a creative outlet that allows me to challenge myself to accomplish something great.

Have you always enjoyed writing?

I have always loved to write, but was discouraged early on by a teacher in elementary school.  It took me until adulthood to actually pen my first novel.

Who is your favorite author?

I don’t think that I could ever choose just one author, but Cassandra Clare and Jessica Sorenson are two in my genre that I absolutely love!

What book genre of books do you adore?

I love YA Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, New Adult, Contemporary Romance…let’s just say I like romance

What book should everybody read at least once?

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  Amazing writing and storytelling.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get my inspiration from everything and anything…people watching, friends, teaching, my kids, other books, family.

What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?

The hardest part for me is definitely marketing.  I am a somewhat shy person and new to the writing world.  I am still trying to figure out what works, and also find the time to figure everything out on my own.

Do you find it hard to share your work?

It is very hard for me to step out of my comfort zone and share my work.  I have been lucky to have a lot of positive support and reviews of Always and Forever, but am constantly self-conscious about what people think of my writing.  As an author, I always appreciate positive feedback, and feel with each book I have written, that I am becoming better and better. With each release, the nerves definitely get to me.

Is your family supportive? Do your friends support you?

My family and friends are extremely supportive of me.  My husband lets me lock myself away and write endlessly on weekends while he hangs with the kids.  And my family and friends are my biggest fans and are great about spreading the word about my books.

Do you plan to publish more books?

I’ve just completed the first draft of the third book in the Secrets of Shadow Hill series.  There are four books planned for this series, so stay tuned!  I am also at the final stages of completing my first Contemporary Romance novel and am very excited to enter a new genre.

What other jobs have you had in your life?

My “day job” is as a 3rd grade teacher.  I feel like I have two dream jobs.  I have the blessed opportunity to work with kids to see their potential and to find confidence in learning.  The best part too is that I get to teach these young kids how to write, and watching them find their inner author is a gift.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

Mantoloking, NJ.  I love the shore and have so many amazing memories there.  I’m a sap.

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?

I write on my laptop, wither at a desk or in bed.  There have many times, either on a run or right before falling asleep, where a great scene comes to me, and I take out my phone and type it all.

Where do you get support from? Do you have friends in the industry?

I get support from my family and some authors who I have met over the past year.  Ashley Chappell has easily been my biggest support in the writing world, and someone who I respect a lot.  She’s an amazing writer!

How much sleep do you need to be your best?

If I get a solid six hours, I’m good to go.  I’m a morning person.  Unless I had wine the night before.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?

I hope when people read my books they feel like they were able be swept away into another world for a while and relax, fall in love, and have fun.

What’s your favorite meal?

Linguini with clam sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and wine.

What color represents your personality the most?

Purple.  I love it.  It makes me happy, and looks good on everyone.

What movie do you love to watch?

I love romance movies, but I could watch Lord of the Rings, Return of the King a thousand times.

Who do you admire?

My mom.  She raised my brother, who is only ten months older than me, my twin sister and me all on her own.  She never once said a bad word about our father, worked hard, I never felt like I went without anything, even though we didn’t have much.  She is an amazingly strong person.

Book Review: Larkswood by Valerie Mendes

Larkswood
by Valerie Mendes
Historical/Family Saga
Orion Books
Review Copy from Amazon Vine
4 Stars

Blurb:

In the tradition of THE FORSYTE SAGA, a sweeping historical novel that spans three generations, telling the dark secrets of a family torn apart.

Larkswood House. The very name suggests birdsong, peace and elegance. It is home to the Hamilton children - Edward, Cynthia and Harriet - who enjoy the freedom and excitement of privilege. But in the glorious summer of 1896, with absent parents and a departed governess, disaster strikes the family, leaving it cruelly divided.

More than forty years later, on the eve of the Second World War, Louisa Hamilton, newly presented at court but struck down with glandular fever, is sent to Larkswood to recuperate. There, for the first time, she meets her grandfather, Edward, home after decades in India. Haunted by terrible memories, the arrival of his granddaughter begins to gladden his heart.

But as Louisa begins to fall under the spell of Larkswood, she realises it holds the key to the mystery that shattered her family two generations before. Will she find the courage to unravel the dark secrets of the past? And can Larkswood ever become home to happiness again?

Review:

London, 1939. Louisa and her elder sister Millicent have been recently presented to the Queen, their official 'coming out' and Millicent is looking forward to all the parties and balls, the new dresses, the eligible men they'll get to meet. Louisa thinks it's all rather silly, she'd rather be reading a book than going to a ball and when glandular fever strikes her down, she is bustled off to Larkswood in the country to recuperate.

Edward, her grandfather has been in India for over forty years and never thought he'd ever see Larkswood again, not after the diastrous summer in 1896, but he soon grows to love it again after Lousia brings it to life. With war not so distant on the horizon, he and Louisa hatch a plan to build a sanotarium on the grounds, where Lousia wants to train as a nurse. But the digging of the foundations also digs up some family secrets that Edward is reluctant to face.

I enjoyed the book, it was a well-written, well-researched historical novel but I was disappointed that I guessed the family secrets long before they were revealed. All of them - there were more than one. There was no suspense regarding the secrets, but the story and characters still draw you in and you want to read on to see what happens to them. I adored Louisa, she was so down-to-earth and you really feel for her when she finds out what the big secrets really are. Her sister Millicent, on the other hand, from her letters to her sister, seems nothing more than a clothes horse and a shallow girl only interested in snagging a rich husband.

A good read if you enjoy things like Downtown Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs.

Guest Post
On Writing by Kelsey Jordan

Most authors know that title to be synonymous with Stephen King and his advice, tips, and comments on writing. If you haven’t read it, I say pick it up. It’s an easy read and I (not that my opinion matters much to people) and those with more clout and “fame” have recommended it as well. That being said, I am a writer with no writing advice to give. Isn’t that odd? To me, it isn’t.

There is this odd thing that has happened over the years, people started trying to tell me how to write. That in order to have real characters I needed to write my characters like this, or my scenes like this. Do this many words a day and so on and so on. The advice never ended until the day I stopped listening.

When I sit down to create, to mold something from a concept or idea, I don’t consult those books who tell me how to craft a believable character. I don’t riffle through books on how to build a scene. Instead of an outward approach, I look inward.

The stories may be mine to write but they aren’t exactly mine. They belong to my characters. It is their fictional lives that I must get right on the page, it is to them that I must be true. Authenticity is a big deal to me. Being true to my world and characters helps the ideas stay fresh and the stories keep flowing. the moment I derail from telling the “fictional truth” the stories dry up, my characters clam up and my head gets to be eerily quiet.

Writers don’t like silence in their characters. Try prying a hundred thousand words out of someone who doesn’t want to talk to you. Hard doesn’t begin to cover it.

Still those who’ve given advice aren’t completely useless. Of course, some of them are better than others. I take whatever I believe applies to me and toss the rest because everyone doesn’t share the same process, need the same tips and or advice. This difference in process is why  there are so many out there. It is also why in the end we have so many different books that stem from the same core concept.

In writing you can’t  “take this road to success” and  actually guarantee it will happen. It’s a subjective art. For me, that is the core reason to be authentic to my characters and the world I’ve created. No one can do it like I can.

If that sounds like advice, that isn’t my intention. This is what works for me, it’s what helped me write The Lycan Hunter and First of Spring, the next book in the series. I foresee this process as being how I will complete my series. This works for me. I can’t say it will work for anyone else.
